The Rhody Shandy

Shandy's are becoming more and more popular each summer. Some breweries are even going to such lengths as to bottle or can them already mixed. For those of you who may or may not know, a shandy is a part beer and part lemon cocktail. The best combos contain a 60/40 split, heavier on the beer of course. I've seen barkeeps make these using lemonade, lemon flavored tonic or soda water, and even Del's. It's a very refreshing drink on hot summer days and since it's beer with a non-alcoholic mixer, the ABV is quite low and enjoyable. The Drink Craft Beer blog just ran the piece, "Why You Should Embrace the Shandy," enticing their followers to try a shandy. In fact, they say to use Narragansett Summer Ale and fresh lemonade. The citrus notes in the beer pair perfectly with the tartness of the lemonade. But don't take our word for it, try this out for yourself. Here's what Drink Craft Beer had to say:

I find the ideal mix to be 60% beer and 40% lemonade, the resulting drink lets the beer come through while allowing the freshness and tartness of the lemonade to compliment the beer. A key to this drink is adding the lemonade second. If you add the beer second it will float on top of the lemonade. Narragansett Summer Ale has been my go-to beer of choice, the Citra hops come alive with the addition of the lemon and, honestly, I could drink these all day. And that's the thing, you can drink these all day. With the lemonade addition a pint is around 2.5% abv making it the ultimate session beer. The lemonade makes all the difference, though. If you go the store bought route Simply Lemonade brand works quite well. If you're planning ahead, though, making a pitcher of lemonade will not only make the drink better but it's a great way to serve an easy drink to guests.
