In 1976, following boot camp, I met a guy from Scituate, Rhode Island, named Charlie "Josh" Riley. We became good friends, and were in the same infantry company, in 2d Bn., 2nd Marines, at Camp LeJeune, home of the 2nd Marine Division. We got drunk together, many times, and partied our asses off for two years running. We worked hard, and we played hard. When we got liberty, we routinely took the bus from the base into the town of Jacksonville, North Carolina, where we would install ourselves in a room at the Holiday Inn, for the weekend, and proceed to spend our paychecks on beer, liquor, movies, bookstores, and the occasional meal. There were two other guys with us, most of the time, who were also from Rhode Island: one named Pete Green, who was from Warwick, and another guy Named Dom Wysocki, who I believe was from Providence. Three Yankees from Rhode Island and a Southerner from Mississippi. Life was good. Life would have been better, I concluded, had we been able to get ahold of some Narragansett Beer, which these guys were always shouting about. I remember Josh singing a song, which was a Narragansett Jingle, apparently, at the time. It went something like, "I can see the sunshine rising, over Narragansett Bay . . ." I'd give anything to view a YouTube of this old commercial, if it's available. I've never had a Narragansett Beer, but I would like to.
