We are proud to announce the ‘Hi Neighbor! Strike Out Cancer with ‘Gansett!’, a fundraising program in collaboration with the Jimmy Fund. Beginning Monday, September 18 through Monday, September 25, 100% of net proceeds from each of ‘Gansett’s Fest Märzen Lager purchased at the Narragansett Brewery & Taproom in Providence will be directly donated to Dana–Farber Cancer Institute in an effort to support adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research.
Founded in Boston in 1948, the Jimmy Fund has a storied history that was launched by a radio broadcast, which Narragansett had the remarkable opportunity to become involved in. To fund his research, Dr. Sidney Farber partnered with the Variety Children’s Charity of New England for a national radio campaign around his young cancer patient, dubbed “Jimmy,” who was surprised by members of the Boston Braves baseball team in his hospital room. The show ended with a plea to listeners to donate so “Jimmy” could get his own TV to watch his beloved Braves
play, launching an effort that continues to bring hope to thousands of children and adults facing cancer throughout the world today.
Among those inspired was advertising manager Jack Haley of Narragansett, who was then sponsoring airtime between a Braves double header. Haley reached out to sportscaster Jim Britt to discuss ways they could continue to advance the cause,
and Britt proceeded to promote the Jimmy Fund while calling the games. Born was the worlds’ leading sports–related charity.
“We could not be prouder of our connection to the Jimmy Fund and its incredible history and impact,” says Mark Hellendrung, president of Narragansett Beer. “In addition to donating net proceeds of Fest towards The Jimmy Fund, fans across the country and at our brewery in
Providence will have the opportunity to donate to the campaign via a QR code. We can’t wait to raise a pint in the fight against cancer and support the decades–long progress the amazing Jimmy Fund and Dana–Farber have made in providing lifesaving care to those right here in New England and beyond.”
“We are thrilled to launch this partnership with Narragansett as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Jimmy Fund,” says Alexa Woodward, J.D., assistant vice president of corporate partnerships at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. “Narragansett was a supporter of the Jimmy Fund when our charitable mission began 75 years ago, and this program will support world–class cancer research and care today. Our patients and families are grateful for
their support.”
