SAVEUR’s Father’s Day gift guide just spotlighted Narragansett as one of the best Father's Day gifts!
One editor recalled discovering “a dozen decades‑old Narragansett beer cans” buried in her dad’s Pawtucket backyard, the same iconic can that Captain Quint famously crushed in the movie Jaws. SAVEUR highlights how, after our temporary fade-out in 1982, we made a comeback in 2005, reclaiming our spot as a Rhode Island's beer. And now, we revive that classic 1975 can design in a fun, limited-edition summer run, just in time for Father’s Day. See below for the full section on Narragansett:
"When my family moved into our home in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in the late 1980s, my house-proud young dad set about overhauling the neglected backyard. In the area that would eventually become his prized vegetable garden, he extracted over a dozen decades-old Narragansett beer cans—clear evidence the previous residents had a soft spot for the state’s beloved local lager. To statewide dismay, ’Gansett had ceased production in 1982, seven years after its most high-profile moment: The scene in Jaws (one of dad’s favorite flicks) where Captain Quint, played by Robert Shaw, crushes a can of the stuff on the deck of the Orca.
Thankfully, the brand was revived in 2005 and, since then, its modestly priced craft brews have become a point of regional pride right up there with the Red Sox, Shepard Fairey, and Family Guy. This summer, ’Gansett’s “crush it like Quint” campaign brings back a limited-edition run of the classic 1975 can design, and I’ll be sending Dad a case to crush in the backyard this Father’s Day. Where the empties end up? That’s up to him."
