Today I came home to a fantastic surprise today - FREE BEER! Wooooot. The lovely folks over at Narragansett surprised me with a couple of cans of their newest seasonal to be sold in cans - Narragansett Porter. To recap my thoughts of Gansett brews:
Lager - Fantastic. It’s my "drinking" beer. Always have tall-boys in the fridge.
Fest - Mediocre at best. Sadly not a competitor in the fest arena, although it might make a good introductory beer for macro drinkers who have never tried a fest beer.
The porter has a fantastic coffee and roasted malt aroma. So far so good!
Flavors are spot-on-delicious as well. Roasted malts all up in your taste-buds. Not overly complex. VERY well balanced...virtually no bitter bite. I might venture to say that I also pick up some vanilla flavor in there. Super easy drinking without sacrificing flavor.
Narragansett’s porter isn’t particularly interesting or unique. That said, it’s definitely a solid straight-up porter. Definitely worth trying out. I bet this stuff is fantastic on tap!

Narragansett Porter is brewed under the supervision of award-winning Brewmaster Sean Larkin at Trinity Brew House in Providence, RI, Cottrell Brewery in Pawcatuck, CT, and High Falls Brewery in Rochester, NY with chinook hops for bitterness, simcoe hops for aroma, black malt, pale malt, chocolate malt, munich malt, crystal malt, roasted barley, and ale yeast. An American-style porter, this winter brew has a deliciously mild chocolate flavor with a hint of smokiness and hops to balance out the finish, making for a robust yet extremely approachable craft experience. Narragansett Porter is 7% Alcohol by Volume and 28 IBUs.
Narragansett Porter has been a part of the brand’s heritage for nearly a century, dating back to 1916 when it was first brewed. When Prohibition struck down breweries across America in the 1920s, the Narragansett Brewing Company was one of just six given a patent by the U.S. government to continue brewing beer for medicinal purposes, based largely on the belief that porter had healing properties. Narragansett Porter was prescribed by doctors and distributed throughout New England to patients suffering from a variety of ailments, particularly blood-related illnesses like anemia. After Prohibition was repealed in the early 1930s, Narragansett Porter became a favorite of New Englanders from Fall River, MA to Falmouth, ME, and was often referred to as "’Gansett Dark."
