If you were going to punk shows in the late 90's to early 2000's, then chances are you know who Hot Water Music is. Touring with bands like Alkaline Trio, Sparta and Glassjaw, Hot Water would frequently play in the Boston area. Growing up around these parts, I had the pleasure of seeing them live every time they came through including the Warped and SnoCore tours. I first saw them back in '98 at a hall in New Bedford known then as Reflections. Then in college we took a trip to Mass Art to watch them slay in a gymnasium with Hot Rod Circuit and Rival Schools. And I'll never forget trekking through a snow storm to see one of their last shows at the Living Room with Alexisonfire. Those were the days. As a matter of fact, the first vinyl record I actually bought was their Never Ender compilation from In Your Ear when the store was on Thayer Street. The band always had a unique approach to their music. On the surface, the artwork of their albums was always eye-catching and just fantastic. Drummer George Rebelo would sometimes use different pieces of percussion and develop innovative rhythms to achieve a new and interesting approach to punk drumming. Rebelo's style paired perfectly with Jason Black's ripping bass lines like I never heard before. Then the best was the contrast of vocals between guitarists Chuck Ragan and Chris Wollard. Ragan had the deep raspy voice while Wollard had more of a higher yet clean voice. Unlike most punk and hardcore bands at the time, their screaming had more of a melody to it while their guitar riffs used different chords and harmonizing leads. With rock like Limp Bizkit always being on the radio, listening to Hot Water Music was like a breathe of fresh air. And yes they did take their name from Bukowski's masterpiece. So it's no surprise that we're happy to welcome them back to Rhode Island this week. After a hiatus, Hot Water recently released a new record, Exister, and are supporting it with a full tour. They'll be at The Met on Wednesday night and we'll of course be there. Can't wait to see everyone singing along with fists in the air again.
