This highly sessionable 4.2% ABV brew from the folks at Narragansett Brewing is the first Summer seasonal released by the company in over 120 years ’ and the first new ale since the ’70s. Summer Ale is brewed under the watchful eyes of Sean Larkin at a variety of upper East Coast breweries (Trinity Brew House, Cottrell Brewery and High Falls Brewery) and features two row pale malt and Citra hops in its recipe.
Crisp on the tongue and packing enough of a hop presence to deliver a light bight, this refreshing brew is available in 16 oz "tallboy" cans. It’s also a brew that would go perfect at just about any outdoor activity from a local softball game to relaxing outside after a hard days work.
Appearance
Summer Ale pours a light amber in color with a one finger head that faded slowly to a thin, patchy lacing.
Aroma
Hints of cereal grain and grassy hops with a light citrus component fill the nose with a rather subdued aroma.
Taste
A light, bready malt backbone is quickly overtaken by a nice hop bitterness that lingers for a decent while after the crisp mouthfeel has faded. The Citra hops have a moderate grapefruit and grassy presence on the palate. This beer is bright and refreshing. There’s not even a hint of the lower ABV to be found.
Overall
Narragansett Summer Ale is a solid little brew. Refreshing and light bodied, it will treat you well on a hot Summer’s afternoon. I’m pretty sure that, had the weather been nicer, I would have been out on the deck with my feet up and a cold glass of this beer ’ instead of inside, hiding from the drizzling rain.
