Narragansett, Fest Lager

by J Frazzetta

Bottle/Tap: 16 ounce cans

I hate to say it, but it is that time of year again. Time to put away the shorts, flip flops, tanning oils and beach towels and drain those few summer beers you have in the back of the fridge. Yes, it is a sad time for many, but wait a second: fall beers are hitting the shelves! Scratch that, this time of year can be a lot of fun if you enjoy red or dark ales chilled slightly and poured into a big glass. For my first beer of fall, those sneaky folks at Narragansett have put out an Oktoberfest lager in a bright orange can called Fest. Simple and effective, the way beer should be.

Through the wonders of magic, I came across a six pack of this brew and put some in my fridge until it was cold enough outside to warrant a fall beer. I poured the beer in my glass, noticed the inviting amber color and the mild aroma. After a good taste I found there were some nice smoky notes to this beer and a hint of bitter. However, I was surprised that it was a smooth taste, unlike some Oktoberfest beers which can be very bitter or dry.

As it came to room temperature the beer itself didn’t lose much of its integrity and stayed smooth instead of becoming watery and bland. I want to say the can had something to do with that: it tasted more like tap beer and wasn’t as carbonated as beer from a bottle. I have to admit that I have always had a low opinion of beers that come from cans, but I would like to retract that statement and say that some can beers aren’t bad at all.

If you are looking for a new Oktoberfest style beer to add to your arsenal, give this a go. How can you say no to a 16 ounce can?
