This Weekend: New Year's Plunge And OHINE

MS Polar Plunge

It goes with out say that New Englanders love traditions. Especially around the holidays. And New Year's Day is definitely no expception. Every year on January 1 several New England beaches become occupied with brave men and women looking to plunge into the icey cold water for several reasons. Narragansett's owner, Mark Hellendrung, will be on First Beach in Newport, RI for the sixth year in a row. But we'll have more on that tomorrow. Down on Matunuck Beach a group takes the plunge to benefit an MS charity. Afterwards they pile into Tara's Joyce Family Pub to warm up with some food and Narragansett beers. There will be live music and a raffle all to benefit a great charity. Narragansett is proud to again be a part of this wonderful tradition.

Outdoor Hockey in New England has been part of our fabric for generations. Now, this custom has a new insignia - OHINE.

When character and tradition collide at the 2010 NHL Winter Classic, OHINE will launch a new initiative that recognizes the passion New Englanders have for frozen ponds. Select fans will brave the bitter cold as the memory of the "Boys of Summer" gives way to "Old Man Winter" when the Boston Bruins host the Philadelphia Flyers on the frozen diamond inside the cathedral known as Fenway Park.

It will be an unforgettable moment, but OHINE is about welcoming more than the Winter Classic; it is about celebrating the memories New Englanders share when throwing sticks into the middle of a pond to pair off teams; it is about embracing the harsh wind and the pucks that stop short on a breakaway because of the snow build up; it is about untying frozen laces after 6 hours of playing; it is about sending the lightest player on the black part of the ice when the puck goes too far.

OHINE is about Outdoor Hockey in New England.

Long after the Winter Classic has been played and baseball fans look to Spring Training, OHINE will be here for outdoor hockey fans. Have a tournament? Tell us about it. Heck, we’ll even start our own tournaments. OHINE is committed to recognizing outdoor hockey in New England whether it is in your own back yard or the Boston Danglers going for an unprecedented 5th world title at the World Pond Hockey Championships.
